'Never
doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can
change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.'
- Margaret Mead
Friends of Foley was founded
in April of 2007 by Foley and some of his friends who enlisted
the help and support of their devoted humans to help with
the process. What all of the friends had in common was a shared
vision for the future and a belief that every animal deserves
a chance at life!
Foley
is our shelter guardian. He came to us several years ago.
He had been badly abused, and mistrusted anyone who approached
him. With time, patience and guidance, Foley has come to believe
in us and trust us. In turn, he has taken to protecting the
shelter, its foster residents, and human friends. Foley found
a home at the shelter, and a purpose, but has decided that
it is time to offer more to the homeless animals in our area,
and so he found some friends and "Friends of Foley"
was formed!
LUCKY
-
LUCKY
was found as a kitten, feral and with a severely injured leg.
Euthanasia was recommended by the first veterinarian to see
Lucky-as a wild kitten facing costly surgery and potential
amputation the odds were against him. But the Bristol Shelter
opted to not give up and instead went ahead to treat the leg
and work with Lucky to help him adjust to life as a beloved
housecat. He now lives with Jen Federico, our Secretary
who considers herself very lucky to share her home with him!
PIXIE
-
Pixie
is as an adorable little "Minhuaha" also knows as
a "Chipin" - well really no one is quite certain
what she is since she was a shelter pup, but she is just as
perfect as any purebred could ever be! She came to the Bristol
Shelter on a plane all the way from Nebraska as part of the
"Puppies with Wings" program. She and the 11 other
puppies she arrived with were all slated for euthanasia at
the overcrowded Nebraska shelter where they ended up. Here
in Rhode Island shelters rarely have puppies; bringing these
puppies in from states that have too many not only helps to
save lives but also promotes adopting from shelters instead
of buying from petstores or breedeers. Pixie now lives with
Friends of Foley President, Dyanne Gibree where
she is a very spoiled little girl!
MATISSE
-
MATISSE
is a 10-year-old calico princess who belongs to our Treasurer
Lori Sendroff. From the beginning, her life was filled
with theatrics. She was born into a home with several cats
that were not spayed/neutered and entered into Lori's life
when a good friend of took it upon herself to find homes for
all the flea-ridden kittens and to have all the cats' spayed/neutered.
Matisse's first academy award was given to her when she had
an allergic reaction to flea medication. From that day on,
it was acid reflux, hyper glycemic, urinary tract infections,
to signs of an eating disorder, which lead to having a special
bowl of food for her placed between her Mom and Dad's pillow.
Some people might find Matisse to be a bit challenging, but
Lori insists that she wouldn't change a thing about her and
that she is honored to have her as her little Princess.
Our logo is a replica of an
original painting that was done for Friends of Foley by a
cartoon artist, Dana Atnip of Cartoon
Pet Portraits. It depicts Foley with his four friends
(representative of the organization's founders). The painting
will be on display in our new shelter (as soon as it is built!)
Keep
your eyes open for our Friends of Foley logo which will soon
be available on t-shirts, mugs, etc.! Every time you see our
logo on signs and advertisements throughout the community
you will know that something exciting is happening at Friends
of Foley!
FOF tees can now be purchased at the Bristol Animal Shelter
for $10
